Deciding what to wear for your next family session is no joke. It can often be as stressful as finding the right photographer, location, and determining your budget. There is a lot of pressure that goes into this ‘we only get one chance’ day. These images will be your next holiday card or your family gallery on the wall. I’m giving you permission to relax, it’s ok! Let the following tips be a guideline to release your inner creative - it’s there!

[if !supportLists]1. [endif]No more matching, think color coordinating instead.

Think of colors in the same palate or tone. Mom is trending with her ripped denim and saggy hat while her boys are wearing neutral colors with a pop of green, and the daughter is a mini version of mom.

Note to self: make it your own, add your own personal touch + style - after all, there is only one of you!

[if !supportLists]2. [endif]Shop at one store for everyone.

Seriously, OLD NAVY kills it every season. They provide affordable options while not always great for longevity, but perfect for the single photo session. And if your kids are anything like mine, they are bribed into these outfits and we will never use these clothes again - budget friendly is always helpful.

INSIDER TIP: most often the salespeople are trained to help with family styling so don’t be afraid to announce your goal for stopping in. It’ll save loads of time and second guessing.

[if !supportLists]3. [endif]Add Textures.

This is where you can get creative so add some personal favorites. Grab a favorite scarf or hat ... or even a red Starbucks cup. As you can see these details make the images more interesting.

4. [endif]Skip the screen printing.

Shirts with characters or words are simply distracting. They don’t photograph well and take away from the kiddos. Instead opt for mixed patterns. Stripes and plaids are two ways to add details and compliment the outfit selections.

5. [endif]Mix it up.

The simplest way to style a photo shoot is to pick a color and mix and match different patterns. This is easy with a little preparation ahead of time, some patience and online shopping. This adorable family chose black, all three have incorporated this color. Mom in polka-dots, baby in plaid with a pop of red and dad also in black with a pop of plaid. Make it your own, they could have done a number of combinations and this image would have turned out equally amazing!

[if !supportLists]6. [endif]Make this an occasion.

Remember, these images are an investment. You want everything to go as planned. Make it fun for the kids, bring everyone into the salon for a blowout, add light mascara to the girls and dress the boy up with a hipster tie. If they know this is a BIG day, they might show up and last a little longer.

[if !supportLists]7. [endif]Do YOU!

Be yourself. If Chuck Taylors are your thing, let’s capture that spirit. A pair of sunny’s or your favorite fedora hat may make your photo session feel natural. Anything that inspires you and let’s your true colors shine, we are all for it!
